Well Supported Approximate Equilibria in Bimatrix Games

In view of the apparent intractability of constructing Nash Equilibria (NE in short) in polynomial time, even for bimatrix games, understanding the limitations of the approximability of the problem is an important challenge.     

Identifying multiple roles of ICT coordinators

This study reports on the development and validation of measurement scales to study the different roles fulfilled by ICT coordinators. Based on a review of the literature, a 24 item questionnaire was constructed and administered to a sample of 177 Flemish ICT coordinators working in primary education. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a four-factor solution: the ICT coordinator as a planner, a budgeter, a technician, and an educationalist. Qualitative data corroborated these roles. This study provides a quantitative measure of the different roles assumed by ICT coordinators in practice. The implications of our findings for schools, researchers and policy makers are discussed.     

Numerical simulations of the internal flow pattern of a vortex pump compared to the Hamel-Oseen vortex

We did a numerical study of the internal flow field of a vortex pump. Five operating points were considered and validated through a measured characteristic curve. The internal flow pattern of a vortex pump was analyzed and compared to the Hamel-Oseen vortex model. The calculated flow field was assessed with respect to the circumferential velocity, the vorticity and the axial velocity. Whereas the trajectories of the circumferential velocity were largely in line with the Hamel-Oseen vortex model, the opposite was true for vorticity. Only the vorticity at strong part load was in line with the predictions of the Hamel-Oseen vortex model. We therefore compared the circumferential velocity and vorticity for strong part load operation to the analytical predictions of the Hamel-Oseen vortex model. The simulated values were below the analytical values. The study therefore suggests that a vortex similar to the Hamel-Oseen vortex is only present at the strong part load operation.     

lordif: An R Package for Detecting Differential Item Functioning Using Iterative Hybrid Ordinal Logistic Regression/Item Response Theory and Monte Carlo Simulations

Logistic regression provides a flexible framework for detecting various types of differential item functioning (DIF). Previous efforts extended the framework by using item response theory (IRT) based trait scores, and by employing an iterative process using group-specific item parameters to account for DIF in the trait scores, analogous to purification approaches used in other DIF detection frameworks. The current investigation advances the technique by developing a computational platform integrating both statistical and IRT procedures into a single program. Furthermore, a Monte Carlo simulation approach was incorporated to derive empirical criteria for various DIF statistics and effect size measures. For purposes of illustration, the procedure was applied to data from a questionnaire of anxiety symptoms for detecting DIF associated with age from the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System.     

Effect of Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) on Antifouling Properties of Asymmetric Poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol) Membranes

Poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol)/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (EVAL/PVP) blend membranes with antifouling properties were prepared by nonsolvent induced phase separation. Residual PVP in the sample was calculated by infrared spectroscopic data and confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. The effect of residual PVP on hydrophilicity and permeation characteristics of the membranes was evaluated. Porosity and equilibrium water content of the membranes were influenced by the addition of PVP. The effect of protein fouling on flux using bovine serum albumin as a model system was studied in detail. The residual PVP content could enhance the antifouling property of the membrane. All membranes proved to have sufficient mechanical strength to withstand pressure‐driven filtrations.     

Design and Characterization of a Fluidized Bed Aerosol Generator: A Source for Dry,Submicrometer Aerosol

A fluidized bed aerosol generator has been designed and built for the purpose of generating a constant output of dry, submicrometer particles with a large number density. The output of the fluidized bed for generating aerosol particles from dry soot powder has been characterized using a differential mobility analyzer and a condensation particle counter. The particle size distribution is bimodal, with a mode in the submicrometer diameter size range and a mode in the supermicrometer diameter size range. The larger diameter mode is fully separated from the smaller mode and can thus be easily removed from the aerosol flow using impaction techniques. The distribution in the submicrometer size range is nearly log-normal, with a count median diameter falling between 0.1 and 0.3 micrometers. A number density of greater than 10⁵ particles cm^-3 of soot particles in the submicrometer range can be produced, constant to within 25% (1 standard deviation) over a 4 h time period. The number density of particles produced in the submicrometer range was found to vary with the ratio of soot to bronze beads in the bed mixture, whether or not a feed system was used, and nitrogen flow rate through the fluidized bed and feed system.
